Visiiri put together this autumn’s changes in the campuses’ student food offerings.

Sunday brunch trial in Frenckell

The restaurant Frenckell & Piha, located near Tampere Central Square, is offering a student-priced Sunday brunch starting on September 8.

“The idea started from us noticing that there is no student brunch available in Tampere,” says restaurant manager Ulla Ainassaari-Vuorinen.

The brunch consists of, among others, frankfurter sausages and meatballs, as well as plant-based alternatives, scrambled eggs, roasted vegetables, cheeses and bread. In addition, there is salad, fruit, and crêpes with whipped cream for dessert.

The brunch is on trial for two months, after which the restaurant will inform about its continuation, explains Ainassaari-Vuorinen.

For students, the brunch costs 5.60 euros and for others the price is 12.90 euros. The brunch is served on Sundays from 12 pm until 3 pm.

Vegebar in the centre campus has changed and renamed

The Vegebar that was above the Yo-restaurant in the main building in centre campus has been renamed as Yläkuppila on August 19.

At the same time, the food that is serves has changed, says Anne Kopra-Riitta, the regional director for Eastern and Western Finland from Juvenes, the company that owns the restaurant.

“This year, we’ll get to have a taste of texmex, Asian as well as Mediterranean flavours.”

The style of the food in the restaurant varies, and Kopra-Riittola wishes for customers to give feedback as well as suggestions for new themes.

The food in Yläkuppila costs the same 2.95 euros for students as other Kela-supported meals in the Yo-restaurant.

Vegan foods are now served daily in the plant-based line at Yo-restaurant, according to Kopra-Riittola. Yläkuppila’s foods regularly have either vegan or plant-based alternatives.

Café Lea in Kauppi opens

Café Lea has opened in Kauppi in the beginning of September. Having been closed for COVID years, the restaurant is now serving soup and panini lunch at a student price.

In addition, the cafeteria has opened a Fusion Kitchen, where you can get dishes with a special price, tells Kopra-Riittola from Juvenes.

“The dishes for the autumn include, for example, streetfood-styled tortilla pizzas and burgers.”

Grilled food in Hervanta’s Reaktori

The campus restaurant Reaktori has also served grilled food from the start of September, in addition to regular food.

“The food is prepared as dishes, which means that the client gets a beeper that notifies when the dish can be picked up from the grill,” says Anne Turunen, restaurant manager for Reaktori.

According to Turunen, there will be à la carte type dishes, such as steaks, but also pizzas and salads.

“We’re trying to give some alternative for everyone.”

Turunen hopes that people will try out the new dishes with open minds. She asks for understanding when there might be crowding.

“We’re trying our best to and we try to serve each customer equally.”

The most expensive dishes will cost 13.5 euros and the cheapest ones are just under six euros for students, tells Turunen.

Grilled food is served in Reaktori from 10.30 am to 2pm from Monday to Friday.
